To prevent a potentially expensive repair to your camera’s USB port, try our simple strategies:

It’s important to support the USB cable so that any strain on the port is alleviated. An easy way to do this is to thread the lead through the strap, allowing enough length to loop lead into socket.

diag.1

Another solution is to use good old Velcro sticky pads. Affix one sticky pad part way down the USB cable (see diag.2), and one to the body of the camera.

diag.2

There’s nothing more frustrating, or potentially disastrous, than reviewing the images from a shoot only to find detritus marring your pristine shots. Keeping your sensor clean is a challenge, especially if you shoot outdoors, but there are some preventative measures you can take…

When changing lenses out in the open, always do this in a shielded position, preferably with the camera facing downwards. In more extreme conditions, it helps to carry a transparent polythene bag, which you can use as a makeshift cover when changing lenses.

Always protect the body with a clean body cap so that no dust or dirt will be transferred to the camera sensor. Any lenses should have a clean back cap fitted when not in use.

Eventually your sensor will need cleaning, regardless of how careful you are. If you have important events coming up, it always pays to have your sensor cleaned in advance to avoid the nightmare scenario of having to clone-out debris from an entire shoot in post production.
